Hey - Welcome to this second edition of Digital Blitz, your 2-minute brief on all things digital in UX, Tech and Compliance.

Today we'll talk about WHY it's important to upgrade your Laravel application.

Laravel is the leading PHP open-source framework, allowing web developers to build SaaS web applications, websites and portals.

Like any software, you regularly need to update it. It is time consuming, costly and risky process but it is really important. And the secret is not to delay it...

It's like not taking your car to the yearly service - you can skip one but if you wait too long, the car will breakdown and could be a total write-off.

So why do you have to invest in upgrading your Laravel application? There are 3 main reasons:

  1. First one is Security - you HAVE to fix the vulnerabilities: you DON'T want to get hacked. The cost of such an event is so much greater than a maintenance agreement, and forget the PR drama. It happened recently to one of our ex-client. We had been telling them for 7 years to upgrade and it finally happened a few months ago - their site was offline for more than a month!
  2. Second is to Reduce Technical Debt - as your software evolves and you add more features, the code you wrote 2 years ago needs to be updated. It's called refactoring and it helps with the 3rd reason...
  3. Which is Performance - as you pay your developers time, you want them to spend time building new features, not wasting time fixing old code.

There you go: Security, maintainability and Performance - these are the 3 reasons why you must invest with your agency or developers into upgrading the underlying framework of your web applications.
